WHERE WOULD WE BE WITHOUT GRANDPARENTS?
Did you know that 60% of childcare provision is provided by
grandparents and over one million grandchildren are denied contact
with their grandparents? One in every hundred children is living
with a grandparent - an average of
2-4
in every primary school.
Grandparents save the economy £4 billion per annum (Age Concern report). 20% of
grandparents under 60 are also step-grandparents and we estimate that there
are over
13.5 million grandparents in the uk.
Special Guardianship
A Special Guardianship Order is an order appointing one or more individuals to be a child's "Special Guardian" It is a private law order made under the Children Act 1989 and is intended for those children who cannot live with their birth parents and who would benefit from a legally secure placement. It is a more secure order than a Residence Order because a parent cannot
apply to discharge it unless they have the permission of the court to do so, however it is less secure than an Adoption Order because it does not end the legal relationship between the child and his/her birth parents. Special Guardianship Factsheet

21st Anniversary
(1987 - 2008)
This year The Grandparents' Association celebrates it's 21st Anniversary. How can you help?

How many grandparents are there in the UK?
There are 14 million grandparents in the UK.
Is this a fixed figure?
No. The number of grandparents at any one time varies according to the age at which parents
give birth, rates of fertility, and the numbers who become parents.
Is there statistical information about grandparents routinely collected in the Census?
No, other than information about 'the number of grandparents residing in households with other family members.'
So how was the information for this web site obtained?
By drawing on and interrogating existing and specialised surveys as well as authoritative
published research studies accurate estimates can be produced.

The Lawyers' List
If 40% of all children in England and Wales are born to unmarried parents, if 1 in 6 cohabitants in opposite sex relationships are unmarried and if 80% of all births outside marriage are now registered, it is clear that a social revolution has overtaken England and Wales since the Second World War. It is also clear that in the event of a relationship breakdown existing agencies are struggling to satisfactorily cover the wide range of permutations resulting from the complexity of life today.
The Grandparents' Association is aware that every child of a single parent has perhaps even more need of extended family though, unfortunately, this very often may include only one set of grandparents and exclude the other. If mediation is to no avail and no other family member is able to step in to help, members of the extended family may find themselves looking to the law to redress the balance. To help in these circumstances, the Grandparents' Association has put together a list of lawyers who will work with grandparents in all aspects of family law.
With best wishes for a speedy resolution to your family dispute.
We are now widening the information on this database to include further services which we feel will be of value to our website visitors. Our datebase is available to all so, whatever your legal needs, check out our list Now!
