OUT OF TROUBLE The UK puts more children in prison as a percentage of its population than any other European country. Feltham in West London is the biggest Prison for young people in Europe with over 700 inmates. Feltham is the only London prison with its own support charity for the inmates. 70+ % of the children in prison have mental health issues, 40+% of the children in prison have language issues - no English in many cases. Friends of Feltham is a small charity with Zero admin costs, which helps in many situations some of which are emergencies that the prison system cannot cope with:
We frequently find that these young people have had no support from parents & many are in care of local authority but sometimes they do have a “Nan” who is kind and offers them some help, so grandparents can be a very powerful support. |
